The Ethiopian Canon: Enoch, Jubilees, and the Wider Scriptures
As taught in the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition
Why the Tewahedo Church reads books no other church prints in its Bible.
Open a Bible printed in Addis Ababa and a reader trained on a Western Bible meets something unexpected. Between Genesis and the Gospels stand books that no Protestant Bible contains and that even most Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Bibles omit: the Book of Enoch (Mäṣḥafä Henok), the Book of Jubilees (Kufale), the four Books of Meqabyan, and a cluster of church-order writings bound in among the apostolic letters. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church holds the broadest scriptural canon of any historic Christian communion. This lesson approaches that canon from within the tradition itself — describing how the Tewahedo Church understands these books, why it never adopted the narrower lists that the Greek and Latin churches settled on, and how it reads the Scriptures that have so often pointed back to its own Ethiopian story.
By the end of this lesson
- Describe how the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church distinguishes a narrower and a broader canon and explain why it has never fixed a single official enumeration.
- Identify the distinctive books of the broader canon — Enoch, Jubilees, the four Books of Meqabyan, and the church-order writings (Sinodos, Didascalia, Clement) — and state what the tradition values in each.
- Explain, from Jude 1:14-15 and Acts 8:26-35, the internal-biblical logic the tradition uses to justify its wider canon, and how Ethiopia appears in the Bible's own narrative.
- Name fairly how Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox churches draw the canon differently, and identify the prior question (decree versus continuous reception) on which the families diverge.
- Connect the canon to the Tewahedo principle of custody — guarding and handing down the apostolic trust — as articulated at the Council of Ephesus.
