The Theotokos, the Saints, and Intercession
As taught in the Oriental Orthodox tradition
How Oriental Orthodoxy honours the Theotokos and the saints without worshipping them
In the Oriental Orthodox family of churches — the Coptic, Syriac, Armenian Apostolic, Ethiopian and Eritrean Tewahedo, and Malankara churches — devotion to Mary the Theotokos and to the wider company of the saints is not an optional layer of piety. It flows directly from the Christology hammered out at the Council of Ephesus in 431, a council these churches receive as the third of the ecumenical councils and as the decisive vindication of Saint Cyril of Alexandria. To understand why these communities address Mary as "Theotokos" (God-bearer) and ask the departed saints to pray for them, one must begin not with Mary herself but with the identity of her Son.
By the end of this lesson
- Explain why Oriental Orthodox Christians treat the title Theotokos primarily as a statement about Christ's identity rather than as an exaltation of Mary in herself.
- Reconstruct the argument of Cyril of Alexandria's first anathema, showing how denying Mary the title Theotokos is held to entail denying the full deity of Christ.
- Distinguish the adoration (worship) reserved for the incarnate Word from the veneration offered to the Theotokos and the saints, citing Cyril's eighth anathema and its demand for 'one adoration' of Emmanuel.
- Interpret Luke 1:46-49, John 2:1-5, Hebrews 12:1, and Revelation 5:8 as the tradition reads them, and connect each to a specific element of Marian or saintly devotion.
- Account for the Oriental Orthodox reception of Ephesus (431) alongside its rejection of Chalcedon (451), including its preference for the miaphysite Cyrilline confession and its objection to the 'monophysite' label.
- State accurately why many Protestant traditions retain the title Theotokos yet decline to invoke Mary and the saints, and how Oriental Orthodox theology answers that objection from within its own logic.
