Holy Tradition and Holy Scripture
As taught in the Eastern Orthodox tradition
Understanding Scripture as the heart of Tradition rather than a separate authority.
Within the Orthodox tradition, the relationship between Holy Tradition and Holy Scripture is not one of competition or even of two distinct, parallel tracks of authority. Rather, it is an organic, single reality: the life of the Holy Spirit in the Church. The fundamental question this subtopic answers is: How can the believer be certain that they are reading the Mind of God rather than the projections of their own ego? For the Orthodox Christian, the answer lies in the "Phronema"—the collective, ancestral mindset of the Church—within which the Scriptures were written, canonized, and interpreted. To separate the Bible from the Tradition that produced it is, in the Orthodox view, as impossible as separating a human heart from the body it was designed to animate.
By the end of this lesson
- **Identify** the Greek term *Paradosis* and explain its foundational role in the Orthodox understanding of "handing over" the faith.
- **Distinguish** between "Holy Tradition" (the life of the Spirit) and "human traditions" (customs, cultural habits, and ethnic traditions) that may be changed.
- **Explain** the organic relationship between Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition, specifically why the Bible is considered the "written part" of Tradition.
- **Articulate** the Orthodox critique of *Sola Scriptura*, demonstrating why a text requires a living community for accurate interpretation.
- **Trace** the historical development of the New Testament canon as a product of the Church’s living Tradition.
- **Defend** the necessity of Apostolic Succession as the historical "scaffolding" that protects the purity of Holy Tradition.
- **Apply** the concept of the *Phronema* (Mind of the Church) to personal Bible study, shifting from individualistic analysis to ecclesial participation.
- **Compare** the Orthodox "single-source" view of Revelation with the Roman Catholic "two-source" view and the Protestant "Scripture-alone" view.
